Is this the LAW?

The images you about to see were recorded the 18th of February in Bebek, Istanbul.
A group of policemen proceed to an amazing display of violence and abuse over an innocent and hepless man and his dogs.
The man was begging the police to hit him but not to hit his animals.
The victim is too affraid to even contemplate pressing charges so there is nothing we can do. However, as an animal protection organization, EHDKD, will take the police officers to court for animal abuse and violation of the Turkish Animal Wellfare Law.
As long as the authorities continue displaying such callous disregard for both human and animal rights we, the people of Turkey, will continue protesting and excercising our rights through legal action. Hopefully one day, someone will realize that this type of behaviour cannot be tollerated on a democratic country at the doorsteps of Europe.
These are embarrassing, shameful, barbaric images that every single Turkish citizen must revolt against.



Seyredeceginiz film 18 Şubat 2007’de Istanbul Bebek’te çekildi. Bir gurup polisin, suçsuz bir zavallı adama ve köpeklerine inanılmaz bir şiddet uyguladığını göreceksiniz. Adam, polislere, köpekleri yerine kendisine vurmaları için yalvarıyor.
Bu şiddete maruz kalan kişi, şikayetçi olmaktan korktuğu için onun adına bizim suç duyurusunda bulunmamız mümkün değil ne yazık ki. Ama, bir sivil toplum örgütü olarak, dövülen köpekler adına Türk adaletine başvuracağız ve bu şiddeti uygulayanların cezalandırılmasını isteyeceğiz.
Biz, insanlara ve hayvanlara yönelik şiddeti protesto etmeye ve kanunların uygulanması için adalete başvurmaya devam edeceğiz. Bir hukuk devletinde kabul edilmesi mümkün olmayan bu utanç verici ve ilkel şiddet uygulamalarına karşı, ülkesini seven, sorumluluk sahibi tüm vatandaşların tavır alması gerektiğine inanıyoruz.

Some public servants or breauchrats are given free flats to live by the government. He sued the authorities for this and the court case continues. Dear Reader,

The blog you are reading is not bilingual but "quatrilingual" as it written not only in Turkish and English but also translated to German and Dutch, you have the links to those translations on the left, under our reader counter that is fast approaching the 41.000 mark.

This website is multilingual because our purpose is a double one, on one hand we are trying to educate the general public about the situation of animal wellfare in Istanbul in the hope the elevate their consciences and prompt them to follow our example, thus taking action against those who are, daily, violating the Turkish Animal Wellfare Law. On the other hand we are leting the world know what is happening here. If this blog was onlywritten in English we would understand your concern, but that, as explained, is not the case. If it was written in Turkish we would be neglecting a wider audience. Some of our readers are influential EU members and foreign animal wellfare organizations who are investing important amounts of money and resources in animal wellfare issues in Turkey therefore desserve and request to be informed. English, German and Dutch are languages spoken in countries where people care about this issue, countries that Turkey wishes to join in a fraternal club. There is no version in Chinese or Arabic for exactly the opposite reasons.

Most Turkish NGO's (non-governmental Organizations) publish bilingual websites, this is not exclusive of NGO's but of Business and Tourism Promotion Organizations. The aim should be to translate this blog to as many languages as possible.The question is not to wether to translate it to english, but to try to translate it to as many languages as possible. I am sure any NGO will agree with this point.

Your message implies that the changes in this Turkish nation must come from within, and we agree with you wholeheartedly, but they will only come once combined action from both within and outside is applied. We are doing both. I dont think this is the forum to explain you the role of international supervision in today's interrelated economies and political systems.

People leave comments sometimes, others they dont. That is the nature of the game. We are not trying to collect comments here we are after improving visibility and moving consciences. In newpaper blogs entirely in turkish sometimes people dont leave any comments either. It just depends as well on how that particular post is promoted. Also, we are sure in some cases people are so embarrassed for what I see that they have nothing to say, they are rendered speechless... this is precisely the reason why in our earlier post, the Trailer of Ghosts of the City everyone rushed to comment, because they know we are combining both approaches in a genuine effort to solve the problem.The carrot and sticks policy is a very old one in International Affairs, the moment you only give carrots the donkey becomes complacent and just will not move.

As for someone worst to come after Arif Eker.. well, it is possible, but there was also the possiblity of someone worst coming after Hitler and he was removed, someone worst coming after Nixon and he was impeached, a worst system coming after Appartheid but the system was abolished, Kohl, Aznar, Berlusconi... the list is long, there is no justification for corruption or ineptitude in a European democracy. And Turkey is, today, a democracy, there is no question of that.

Mind you, there was also the possibility of someone coming after Clinton.. and yes.. the world got someone much worst.. twice!

Our goal is not only to remove Arif Eker from his post. Our goal is to make the Istanbul Municipality and the public understand that there is a solution to the Stray Dog issue and that this solution is the correct implementation of Neuter and Return. Arif Eker is, unfortunately, not the man to implement such program.

Your comment implies a certain level of nationalism, one that is very worrying in today's turkish context. The problem of the treatment of stray dog is not just a problem of the turks. This is a matter of humanity and decency. We are not trying to bring down the nation here, we are just a growing group of mostly Turkish people that have grown tired of seeing institutional cruelty around them. Our only goal is to improve the country where we live, the country we love.

To use a quote by Ataturk: Our great ideal is to raise our nation to the highest standard of civilization and prosperity.

If you want to engage in an academic debate about civil society and animal wellfare we are more than open to and your questions will be answered in this blog.

Torture in Denizli - Denizli’de İşkence

The city is clean and modern. Most turkish families lived in Europe before returning to Turkey. What happened? The desperate situation of street animals in this city has shocked the Turkish media sector. Daily, dogs and cats are found tortured by unknown people and taken to hospitals by animal lovers. In most of those cases the doctors have had to practice euthanasia on the animal to spare him unnecesary suffering. " We are here to sterilize street dogs in order to reduce the stray population, but lately we are swamped with animals that come to us tortured in the most unbelieveble ways so we are not able to perform our job any longer. The clinic is full of those poor dogs and cats. The Turkish government is obliged, by law to find those people and apply sanctions, people in the neighbourhood should protect animals instead of allowing this to happen.
A well known psychiatrist commented briefly on the situation in Denizli, " Today is animals, tomorrow human beings. This short of mentally ill individuals won't stop here..."

İkincisi: Bebekler de doğarken katil olarak doğmazlar; yetişme ve yetiştirme şekline göre sonradan olurlar. Hiçbir kedi ya da köpek insan kadar tehlikeli değildir. Hatta aslan bile en fazla insanı parçalar; ama insan insanın hem ruhunu, hem kalbini, hem kendini öldürür, sevgisini yok eder, beynini karartır, ayaklı ceset yapabilir...

Dördüncüsü: Daniel Picouly'nin dediği " Fikirler çocuklar gibidirler; onlara sahip olmak yetmez, onları yetiştirmek gerekir" sözünü doğumdan hemen sonra anne-babaya bebekle beraber vermek gerektiği gibi fikirleri bir birini boğmak için dizayn etmemelidir. Büyükler için, yetişkinler için bir not daha var yüzlerce yıl önce yazılmış: anne leyleğin sözü... Hani bir evin kiremitli çatısına yuva kurmuş anne leylek yavrularına yiyecek getirmeğe gittiğinde, mahallenin çocukları bu yuvadaki yavru leyleklere taş atarlarmış... Onlar da annelerine bu çocukları şikayet ederlermiş. Anne leylek de " ... sabır yavrularım, sabır...onların hepsi kötü çocuklar değildir... biz yakında bol güneşli, sıcak iklimlere gittiğimizde o acımasız çocuklar üşüyecekler, sizler üşümeyeceksiniz...." demiş. Ama bir yavru leylek : " bütün ceza bu mu? Başka ceza vermeyecek miyiz onlara? " diye sormuş. Anne leylek de, onlara unutamayacakları bir ders vereceklerini söylermiş.

- anneciğim, nedir bu ders? , diye sormuşlar..

Anne leylek şöyle demiş:

- Leyleklerin çocuklara kardeş getirdikleri gölü göstereceğim size. Oradan çocuklara birer kardeş alıp döneceğiz. Ama kötü niyetli çocuklara kardeş getirmeyeceğiz. Onlar da buna üzülecekler ve böylece cezalarını almış olacaklar...., demiş.

Today, Sunday February 4th, Bekir Coskun, the editor of Hurriyet, the largest circulation newspaper in Turkey, published this harrowing article. We believe it is worth reading and reflecting upon its content.
Turkey is at the crossroads, not only on animal welfare issues. It is time for the nation to choose a path, prosperity and development guided by humane principles or to be continue asserting those well-known prejudices it is fighting so hard to shake. EHDKD

Translation of the column by Bekir Coskun:

Goldi carried his own water and food bowl, leash in his mouth. When it was time for vaccination, he went to the Veterinary Medical Center, himself, with the vaccination certificate in its mouth.
Yesterday, the veterinarians that use to take care of him were crying.
Because Goldi was killed.
Not only Goldi, recently, in many districts of Ankara, Municipalities have been committing mass murders.
In Oran district, that night, 40 dogs were lost.
As our beloved friend, Deniz Biliroglu, has reported, the owners found some of them lying dead on the snow. The rest were lost. The murderers had collected the corpses of the rest.
Goldi was found, dead, in the garden of his own house.
Members of Parliament, higher bureaucrats, live in that district. That is, those who have issued the Animal Protection Law and are responsible for its implementation.
I continue asking: In Turkey every day, blood is being shed. People are continuously killing each other.
Would those criminals with guns in their hands had grown up without love if they have had a dog or a cat when they were children?
Wouldn't a kid, friends of animals that cannot talk be more able to communicate with fellow humans once he grew up?
Isn't loving a bird, a cat or a dog the first lesson to love, to protect and not to mistreat a living soul?
If you show children that killing is a way of establishing peace and comfort, how will the spilling of blood be stopped in this country?
How will murder, death, terror, ever stop?
Children, the owners of Goldi and other dogs and cats have been crying for days. Some of them are still looking for their lost friends in the streets of Ankara.
This is how the stories of murder, cruelty, merciless lack of respect for life begin. Here is how the murderes, the criminals, the people with knifes grow up.
The grown ups are telling children that killing is not bad, can't you see that?
I cannot help remembering Goldi, who was more conscious than the grown ups. He is waiting in front of the door, with the vaccination card in his mouth.

Illegal Dog Fights in Turkey

Barely a day passes without someone approaching us with news of dogs poisoned by municipalities, or dropped in remote locations by Arif Eker and his barbaric team or some other horrible case of animal cruelty.

This video is just an example of the images we are bombarded with daily. This illegal dogfight took place in Kayramanmaras in Anatolia. The spectators bet on whose dog will die first. The loosing dog was not given veterinary care and was left to die after the fight was over.

Illegal animal fights are usual in Turkey and the gendarmerie, responsible to tackle this kind of illegal activities, prefers, in most cases, to turn a blind eye and ignore the situation.

As long as the Turkish government refuses to take action and apply exemplary sanctions this kind of situations will continue, images like this will get out and the world will continue getting the wrong impression about Turkey.

When will the government and the municipalities realize it is in their own interest to deal with these appalling cases of animal cruelty?
